Flybuys Points: What They're Actually Worth (and Smarter Ways to Use Them)

A plain-English guide to Coles' Flybuys program — what your points are worth, the ways to spend them, and when converting to Velocity beats taking the dollars.

Flybuys is Coles' loyalty program and one of the biggest in Australia by membership, so a huge number of people are quietly banking points at the supermarket without a clear sense of what they're worth. The good news is that Flybuys is refreshingly simple to value.

The standard redemption is 2,000 points for $10 off your shop — which makes a Flybuys point worth about half a cent. That's your baseline. Everything else is about whether another option beats it.

The main ways to use Flybuys points

Flybuys Dollars

2,000 points = $10 off at Coles, Kmart, Target, Liquorland, Officeworks and other partners. Simple, reliable, and effectively cash off things you already buy.

Convert to Velocity

1,000 Flybuys points convert to 500 Velocity Points. This can beat the 0.5c baseline if you value Velocity points above 1 cent — but only if you'll actually use them.

Gift cards

Redeem points for gift cards to a range of retailers. Compare the points cost against the card's face value before you commit.

Products & experiences

Available, but usually the weakest value per point. Best treated as a way to use points you wouldn't otherwise redeem.

So what's a Flybuys point worth?

About 0.5 cents when you take the standard $10-per-2,000 Flybuys Dollars route. That's the number to beat.

The one option that can beat it is the Velocity conversion — 1,000 points becomes 500 Velocity Points, and if you'd value a Velocity point at more than 1 cent (many people do, on the right flight), you're ahead. If you'd never use the Velocity points, though, the plain dollars off your shop is the smarter, more certain choice.

Smart moves with Flybuys

  • Default to Flybuys Dollars. For most people, $10 off a shop you do anyway is the most reliable value.
  • Convert to Velocity only with a plan. The maths only works if those Velocity points get used on a decent redemption.
  • Scan every time. An unscanned shop earns nothing, and it can't be claimed later.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Flybuys point worth?

About 0.5 cents on the standard redemption — 2,000 points gets you $10 in Flybuys Dollars off your shop. Converting to Velocity can be worth more if you'll use the Velocity points well.

Do Flybuys points expire?

Yes. If there's no earning or redeeming activity on your account for 12 consecutive months, your points automatically expire. Any point earned or redeemed resets that clock.

What's the Flybuys-to-Velocity conversion rate?

1,000 Flybuys points convert to 500 Velocity Points. You can transfer manually or set up automatic conversion once you reach the threshold.

Where can I use Flybuys Dollars?

At Coles and partners including Kmart, Target, Liquorland and Officeworks — $10 for every 2,000 points, applied at the checkout.
