Do Velocity Points Expire? (And How to Stop It)
Velocity Points expire after 24 months of inactivity — but keeping them alive is easy once you know what actually counts.
Velocity Points don't expire on a fixed date — they expire when your account goes quiet. Specifically, if you don't have a qualifying activity for 24 months, your entire points balance can be wiped, no matter how large.
The good news: the bar to stay active is very low, and plenty of everyday things reset the clock.
What resets the 24-month clock
Any 'long-term activity' gives you a fresh 24 months. That includes earning points by flying with Virgin Australia or partners, earning through a linked credit card, redeeming points for any reward, transferring points to or from Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, earning through shopping partners or the Velocity e-Store, and transferring Flybuys points to Velocity.
A few things don't give you the full reset — short-term moves like family transfers or pooling only extend expiry to the end of the following month. If in doubt, do something that clearly earns or redeems a point.
The cheapest ways to stay active
- Link and use a shopping partner. A single earn through the e-Store or a partner like 7-Eleven counts.
- Transfer a few Flybuys points. If you shop at Coles, converting even a small number of Flybuys points to Velocity resets the clock.
- Redeem something small. Any redemption counts as activity — you don't need to book a flight.
Frequently asked questions
How long until Velocity Points expire?
After 24 months with no qualifying (long-term) activity on your account. Any earn or redemption resets the full 24 months.
Does earning through a credit card keep my points alive?
Yes — points earned via a linked credit card count as long-term activity and reset the expiry clock.
If my points expire, can I get them back?
Generally no. Once points expire they're gone, which is why an occasional small activity is worth the habit if you're holding a balance.
Do status credits expire too?
Yes, but separately — status credits run on a 12-month cycle tied to your membership year and can't be reset by everyday activity.
