Qantas Frequent Flyer Is Changing on 8 December. Here's What to Do Before Then

Points Club and Green tier are closing, status credits start rolling over, and you'll be able to earn status without flying. A plain-English guide to the biggest Qantas shake-up in years — and the deadlines that matter.

Qantas calls it the biggest change to status in the program's history, and for once the press release isn't exaggerating. From 8 December 2026, Qantas Frequent Flyer members can earn Status Credits from everyday spending, roll unused credits into the next year, and say goodbye to two programs many members quietly relied on: Points Club and Green tier.

Some of this is genuinely good news. Some of it means you'll need more Status Credits to hold on to your tier from 2027. And a couple of things have hard deadlines in the next few weeks. Here's everything, in order.

The key dates at a glance

  1. Now

    Flight Reward Finder is live

Qantas' search tool shows international Classic Flight Reward seats across Qantas, Jetstar and partner airlines.

  2. By 7 Dec 2026

Last chance to qualify for Points Club

Points need to land in your account by 7 December to count toward Points Club. Unlock it in time and you keep the benefits until the end of your next membership year.

  3. 8 Dec 2026

Rollover and Status Credits on the ground begin

Points Club and Green tier are retired. Status Credit rollover starts, and everyday spending can earn up to 140 Status Credits a year.

  4. Within 90 days

Green tier members choose a final reward

If you've unlocked Green tier, you'll have 90 days to choose 50 Status Credits or 10,000 Qantas Points.

  5. 2027

One number to earn and keep each tier

Separate attain and retain targets are replaced by a single Status Credit target per tier, the Loyalty Bonus ends and new lifetime milestones arrive.

What's changing — the five big moves

Status Credit rollover (from 8 Dec 2026)

Earn more Status Credits than your tier needs and part of the excess carries into next year. It replaces the old Loyalty Bonus.

Status Credits on the ground (from 8 Dec 2026)

Up to 140 Status Credits a year across 10 everyday categories — credit cards, everyday shopping, retail and lifestyle, car, insurance, hotels, holidays and experiences, banking and home loans, home utilities, and sustainability. They count toward lifetime status too.

Points Club retired (8 Dec 2026)

No new Points Club or Points Club Plus members after the cut-off. A selected Qantas Points-earning credit card will instead offer Status Credits on Classic Reward bookings.

Green tier retired (8 Dec 2026)

Members who've unlocked it get one final choice of 50 Status Credits or 10,000 Qantas Points.

One target per tier (2027)

The same number to earn a tier and to keep it — which means higher targets for anyone used to the lower 'retain' numbers.

How many Status Credits you'll need from 2027

Today you need more Status Credits to reach a tier than to keep it. From 2027 there's one number — the old 'attain' target.

Gold figures are confirmed on Qantas' own page; Silver, Platinum and Platinum One as reported by Executive Traveller. Keeping Platinum will need 200 more Status Credits than today — about 17% more. Source: Qantas program changes page; Executive Traveller (27 Aug 2026).

Points Club is ending: what you keep, and the 7 December deadline

Points Club rewards members who earn lots of Qantas Points away from flying: 150,000 points in a membership year for Points Club, or 350,000 for Points Club Plus, with flying points counting for up to 20,000 of that and no single transaction counting for more than 125,000.

The perks are real — lounge invitations or a complimentary Qantas Club membership, Qantas Hotels vouchers, wine vouchers, Marketplace discounts and Status Credits on Classic Flight Rewards. If you unlock Points Club before it closes, you keep those benefits until the end of your next membership year. For example, a member whose year ends in April could keep them until 30 April 2028.

If you're close to a threshold, the safe reading of the rules is that points must land in your account by 7 December 2026. Points from a purchase made on 6 December that post on 9 December won't help — so finish early.

Green tier: should you take 50 Status Credits or 10,000 points?

Take the 50 Status Credits only if they move you over a tier line you'd otherwise miss — Silver needs 300, so 50 can be the difference. They count toward lifetime status, too.

Otherwise, take the points. At the widely quoted 1.6-cent average for Qantas Points, 10,000 points is worth around $160 on a good flight redemption. Even spent on gift cards at roughly 0.46 cents a point, it's about $46 of real value.

What to do before 8 December

  1. Log in and check your Status Credits. Note how far you are from the next tier — and from the 2027 single target for the tier you already hold.
  2. If you're near Points Club, close the gap early. Aim to have qualifying points posted by 7 December, not just purchased.
  3. Green tier members: decide on purpose. 50 Status Credits if they tip you into a tier; 10,000 points if they don't.
  4. Map your everyday spending to the 10 categories. Qantas will publish the earn targets for each category when the program launches in December. Things you already do — supermarket shopping, insurance, energy — may now count toward status.
  5. Keep your points active. Qantas Points expire if you don't earn or use any for 18 months. Status changes won't save an inactive balance.

Frequently asked questions

What is changing with Qantas Frequent Flyer on 8 December 2026?

Status Credit rollover begins, members can earn up to 140 Status Credits a year from everyday spending, and Points Club and Green tier are retired. In 2027, a single Status Credit target per tier replaces separate attain and retain targets.

Is Qantas Points Club ending?

Yes. Qantas is retiring Points Club and Points Club Plus from 8 December 2026. Members who've unlocked it keep their benefits until the end of their next membership year.

How do Status Credits on the ground work?

From 8 December 2026 you can earn up to 140 Status Credits a year across 10 everyday categories, such as credit cards, everyday shopping, insurance and home utilities. Qantas has said Qantas Points-earning credit cards can unlock 20 Status Credits and everyday shopping 10; the targets for each category will be published at launch.

When does Qantas Status Credit rollover start?

From 8 December 2026. Gold, Platinum and Platinum One members can roll over 50% of excess Status Credits (up to 350 for Gold and 500 for Platinum and Platinum One). Silver members can roll over 25%, up to 100.

How many Status Credits will I need to keep Gold in 2027?

700 — the same as reaching Gold today. Qantas has confirmed one target to attain and retain each tier from 2027, replacing the old 600 Status Credit retain target for Gold.

Should I choose 50 Status Credits or 10,000 points for Green tier?

Choose the Status Credits if they'll push you over a tier threshold. Otherwise 10,000 Qantas Points is usually better value — roughly $160 at the 1.6-cent average used by points sites, or about $46 in gift cards.

Do Qantas Points expire?

Yes, if you don't earn or use any Qantas Points for 18 months. Any earn or redemption resets the clock — but family transfers don't count as activity.

Status aside — are your points pulling their weight?

Mavitra brings every loyalty balance into one place with its value and expiry date, and turns idle points into gift cards for brands you already shop with.
